Landline phone numbers in India change frequently and businesses are slow in updating contact information, including websites.
To call India from your country
- Dial the international access code for your country. E.g. 011 (from the U.S. and Canada), 00 (from the U.K., Ireland, or New Zealand)
- Dial the country code for India: 91
- Dial the city code, omitting the first zero. E.g. 832 for Goa (instead of 0832)
- Dial the telephone number.
Note: To call a cell phone number in India from your country, skip the step 3 above.
Making calls within India
Hotel telephone costs can be very expensive, even when you make a national long-distance call (referred to as STD call). All over Goa, you'll see yellow ISD/STD signs indicating a privately operated International Subscriber Dialling (ISD) and Standard Trunk Dialling (STD) facility; these are very reasonably priced. Your call is monitored by a computer system, and you pay at the end of your session.
Make sure you have the correct phone number with you and check that the phone is in a quiet spot, or you run the risk of not hearing a word during your conversation.
To call a mobile phone number that is not in the state in which you are based, dial "0" before the 10-digit number.
Note that the Indian toll-free numbers (numbers starting with 1800) are usually not standard across telephone operators; most can only be dialled from either the state owned BSNL network or from private operator networks like Airtel, Reliance etc.
Making calls from cell phones
When making landline calls from cell phones, you'll need to punch in the full area code of the city (including the “0” prefix) and telephone number irrespective of where you are calling from.
When calling a cell phone number within Goa, just dial the 10-digit cell phone number; to call a cell phone outside Goa, add a "0" before the number.
