Must-Have Items on a Road Trip

Road Trip

Two years ago, I went on my first road trip with my childhood friends. Well, we were a little afraid before our journey because none of us had any experience in road-tripping before.

But it turned out so well; we made a lot of memories, and importantly, that road trip taught me a lot of lessons for future trips.

And, in this article, I’m going to share a few must-have items that should be by your side whenever you hit the road. So, let’s start:

A Reliable Internet Connection

An ever-available internet connection is a must on every road trip. Especially if you’re road-tripping for the first time, because it may help you stay in touch with your loved ones or get real-time traffic updates. However, a reliable internet connection may also be useful to:

  • Explore affordable accommodation options on the Internet.
  • Discover local eateries and recommended restaurants by other visitors.
  • Stream entertainment content, such as playing songs while traveling.
  • Keep your friends and family members updated on social media platforms.
  • Get real-time weather updates of your destinations and plan your trip accordingly.

Well, we had mobile data on our first trip, and there were no signs of cellular signals once we crossed New York’s suburbs. Luckily, I had subscribed to Xfinity Internet plan for home, and upon calling Xfinity customer service, I learned I could access its free wifi hotspots spread nationwide. It saved us, but you must plan in advance to avoid losing connectivity.

A Car Toolkit

It does not matter if your car is in mint condition or if you spend a significant amount of money to fix it before the road trip, having a car toolkit is a must in all conditions.

Even cars in pristine condition may break down in the middle of nowhere. A loose nut, a flat tire, an overheated radiator, or any unforeseen situation may halt your journey. So, instead of worrying about roadside assistance, don’t you think it’s better to fix the minor problems yourself?

In case of any major technical issue, a car toolkit may help you partially fix your car till you reach a workshop. This way, a car toolkit will save you from being stranded helplessly on the roadside.

Travel Apps

Well, you may find numerous travel apps for different purposes. Here, I will only tell you about the travel apps that I use while on the road.

HipCamp

Road trips are more fun when you camp instead of staying in a guest house. But, finding a secure spot for camping may be a problem at some locations. Don’t worry. HipCamp allows you to access a huge library of safe public parks, Recreational Vehicle(RV) parks, private lands, and all other places open for camping.

While almost all the public parks are free, you may need to pay a small fee to camp on private land.

The Outbound Collective

This app is a crowd-sourced platform where visitors put up reviews about different locations in an area. This way, you may easily get an idea if a destination is worth visiting or not.

So, whenever I’m passing by a small town or a village, I always check The Outbound Collective to find places that are worth a visit. Also, you may rent out a spot in an RV park, glamping, cabins, or even treehouses to spend a night from The Outbound Collective.

GasBuddy

Besides snacks, gasoline may be the biggest expense on a road trip. And if your vehicle’s mileage is not efficient, frequent fill-ups may put an extra burden on your wallet. However, if you constantly keep an eye on GasBuddy, you may save a lot of money on gasoline.

On GasBuddy, thousands of gas stations are registered, and based on your location, this app may guide you to the cheapest gasoline available nearby. Also, you may set up gas price alerts on the app. So, whenever you’re near a gas station that offers cheaper gas, the app will let you know instantly.

Wrapping Up: Honorary Mentions

The below items may seem ordinary to most people, but trust me, they can be an effective addition to your road trip:

Card Games

For how long would you gaze at the green fields or listen to the music on a long road trip? Well, if you’re traveling with friends or family, there’s no better and fun time pass activity than playing a card game.

Car Charger or Power Bank

A car charger or a power bank should keep your devices charged on the go. This way, you may easily play music, watch a movie, navigate your way, stay in touch with your loved ones, and more without worrying about the depleting battery.

Camp Chairs

Camp chairs may come in handy when you want to take a break on the roadside to have lunch or enjoy the breathtaking scenery on the way.
